How to install a Hood Decal. Magazine, January 2003

1.   Graphic Express offers all sorts
of decals for many makes of cars-including
vintage Mustangs. Although we went with
black for the factory look, the '85-'86 hood
decal is also available In other colors.

GE supplied two bottles of wetting solution
and a squeegee for our installation process.

GE says you can make your own
wetting solution with a mixture of
1 tablespoon of Dawn dishwashing soap
and 1 gallon of water.

2. Graphic Express recommends the
surface temperature of the hood be no
less than 60 degrees F.

You should also maintain a temperature
of at least 45 degrees F for 48 hours after
installation.

Begin by thoroughly washing and drying
the area where the decal will be applied.
Make sure the surface is cool to touch
before installing the decal; you don't want
the surface too cold or too hot.

Be sure to work in a shaded area.
GE also recommends using a naphtha-base
cleaner to remove dirt, grease, old striping
adhesive, or wax.

3. Once the surface is ready, place the
decal on the hood and measure the width
of the hood and the width of the decal at
the base stripe.

4. Also measure the top of the stripe.
Record the figures of all three
measurements and divide each one in half.

5. Use a pencil to mark the center point
of both the hood and the decal.
This allows you to accurately center
the decal on the hood.

6. With the decal accurately placed
using the method illustrated above,
securely tape it into position at the
center of the decal with masking tape
so you can “hinge” the decal up and
install each half separately.

7. Once the decal is taped into place,
lift the end nearest the windshield and
completely cover the hood with wetting
solution.

Be sure to spray the entire surface of the
hood, as you can't use too much solution.

8. Begin peeling off the plastic back
liner to expose the adhesive surface of
the decal.

9. Peel the liner to the point where the
decal is taped to the hood, and cut off the
liner with a razor blade.

10. It's best for two people to lay the
decal into place.

The part held here (with the backing
removed and lots of solution on the hood)
is ready for final placement.

Carefully lay it in place, keeping it taut
to avoid any wrinkles once it's on the hood.

11. Using your hands and the supplied
squeegee, begin moving the solution and
air bubbles to the edge. If the decal isn't
placed properly, you'll have time to
reposition it before the solution dries.

One purpose of the solution is to allow
you to move the decal precisely into place
once you've affixed it to the hood with the
adhesive backing already in contact with
the hood.

12. Next, slowly pull the masking tape
off the hood.

13. With the masking tape off, you can
easily pull back the decal far enough to
remove the rest of the adhesive backing.

14. Peel the backing away from the
decal, taking extra care when you get
the section with the stripes and “GT”
logo, since they're separate from
the decal.

Peel slowly, making sure the separate
pieces aren't torn from the top paper tape.

15. If you have trouble getting the
backing to separate from the smaller
pieces of the decal, use some wetting
solution to loosen the backing.

You can also use a straight-edge
razor blade to help separate it.

16. Once separated from the backing,
the front half of the decal is ready to be
set into place.

Again, be sure the hood is liberally
covered with wetting solution before
setting the decal down.

17. With the decal in final position, rub
out as many air bubbles and solution
pockets as possible with your hands
and the squeegee.

Judging from the smile on the face of
Rod & Custom Editor Terry McGean,
this decal will certainly look-as he
would say-”fresh” once the
installation is complete.

18. Wait about a half hour before removing
the top paper tape, as shown here.

Be careful not to pull the decal back up
with the tape. If it pulls with the tape,
press it back into place and re-squeegee it.

Then wait another 30 minutes if necessary.

19. After a half hour, we were able to
carefully lift the paper tape up and away
from the decal.

Again, when dealing with separate pieces
at the front of the decal (at the front of
the hood), be very careful they don't
separate from their proper positions.

20. Graphic Express also has these
“Mustang GT” trunk lid decals to add to
the factory look of your square-light 5.0.

21. As R&C Editor McGean would say, the
finished decal looks totally fresh.

We'd certainly agree the factory trick look
can't be denied on this resto-in-process
1986 GT drop-top.
